Prosecution of femicides from rural communities

Authors

Abstract

The increase in femicide in Ecuador has been exacerbated by instability in the political and judicial system. This research analyzes the causes and factors that contribute to the appearance of femicides in rural communities in Ecuador, using a qualitative-causistic approach based on case studies and interviews. Socioeconomic, cultural and geographic factors that influence gender violence and obstacles to access to justice in these areas were examined. The predominant causal factors are the economic dependence of the victim (64 %), patriarchal norms (56 %) and geographical isolation (60 %) are the main factors that contribute to femicides in rural areas. The escape of the femicide (30 %) and the absence of trial in absentia make it difficult to apply justice in these cases. Femicides in rural areas are more affected by geographical isolation and lack of access to justice, which aggravates the vulnerability of rural women. Community leaders confirmed that gender violence is culturally accepted in 60 % of rural communities, and that prevention programs are insufficient (80 %). Judicial barriers and inequality in access to justice aggravate impunity in these areas. It is recommended to strengthen judicial mechanisms, implement trials in absentia and develop educational programs that challenge patriarchal norms and promote gender equality.
