The interspecies principle: an ecological vision for the equitable use of natural resources
Abstract
This article investigated the Inter-Species Principle as an ethical, ecological, and practical framework to promote the equitable use of natural resources, considering not only human needs but also the rights and importance of non-human species in interconnected ecosystems. A thorough review of academic and legal literature was conducted, along with a comparative analysis of various environmental policies, including those that recognize the rights of nature. To complement this analysis, case studies were carried out in protected areas of countries like Ecuador, where these policies have been implemented, and compared with areas managed under traditional approaches. The qualitative methodology included interviews with key stakeholders, such as legislators, indigenous communities, environmental activists, and natural resource managers, to capture an overview of the benefits and challenges in the application of these policies. The results indicated that areas where policies based on the Inter-Species Principle were applied showed greater biodiversity recovery, improved water and soil quality, and natural regeneration, in contrast to those managed conventionally. It was concluded that this ethical approach not only promotes ecological sustainability and biodiversity preservation but also offers an innovative framework for more equitable and inclusive resource management. This research provides new perspectives on environmental governance and suggests opportunities to develop global policies that recognize the interdependence of all species.
