Abstract

This study explores the impact of drug trafficking and the dominance of armed groups in Ecuador's prisons on the socio-economic fabric and governance of the country's rural areas. The paper analyzes structural challenges, such as poverty, social exclusion, and limited economic opportunities, which exacerbate rural vulnerabilities. The alarming growth of violence related to drug trafficking has impacted both rural zones and the penitentiary system. Using a qualitative approach and a multi-criteria analysis method (AHP), the research identifies key factors like the impact of drug trafficking, socio-economic inequality, governmental response, and demographic consequences. The findings suggest that a comprehensive intervention, including prison system reforms, rural economic development, and international cooperation, is crucial to address these challenges.
